Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo - What The Next Gen Video Games Could Look Like

Written by

A week ago, Epic Games released a new tech demo for the next version of their game engine, Unreal Engine 5. According to Epic, the demo shown was running on a developer version of the PlayStation 5. It is unclear whether that means the demo is running on actual PlayStation 5 Hardware or a dev-kit unit with close hardware specs to the PlayStation 5. Nevertheless, the demo shows off what the next-generation consoles maybe capable of once in hands of developers focused developing a game fo the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Richard Leadbetter over at Eurogamer, has a in-depth article of the tech demo and interview quotes from Epic's CEO, Tim Sweeney. In that article, they further discuss next-gen architecture, performance capability, asset fidelity, the release plans and immediate goals of Unreal Engine 5. Sweeny also touches on Unreal Engine's early goal to help developers bring next-generation games to as many platforms as possible, from the high-end gaming systems, to mobile devices and even maintaining compatibility with older generation platforms.

While the tech demo looks quite impressive, it is still uncertain and too early to predict when we will begin to see AAA studios releasing titles that truly showcase the potential of Next-Generation hardware and software
