New Consumer 3D Motion Tracking

Written by

LEAP is a new spatial tracking device developed by Leap Motion a start up company based in San Francisco and what they are showing is really promising.

I wanted to make a post about this up coming product because for one it interests me from a technological aspect and it has been receiving some buzz in the gaming community. Motion controls are becoming more and more popluar, the Kinect for the Xbox 360 has really commericalized 3D tracking devices / cameras.  Leap is designed to be compatible with PC and Macs and will allow us to do things like, manage folders, browse the web and even game using our hands, stylus (and even chopsticks!).  I could see this being used in the future with Windows 8 and the new metro interface. The device's been compared to the Kinect, but one key difference between the two is that unlike Kinect which uses a camera to detect motion, Leap is a small sensor that is design to sit infront of your computer. What interests me about the Leap Motion aside from how accurate it seems to be, is also how small and compact the device is. The developers claim it is one of the most accurate 3D motion trackers currently avaliable. Leap Motion is currently advertsing pre-orders for their desktop tracker on their website if you are interested in learning more about them.
